Adult Psychiatric Services

New Horizons is certified by the Missouri Department of Mental Health to provide the "Community Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (CPRP)." Program services include:

Initial/Annual Evaluation and Treatment Plan

Each consumer has an initial and annual comprehensive evaluation to assess strengths and problems, and to guide treatment for the coming year. With assistance from staff, consumers are encouraged to develop and attain their own life goals.
Community Support Staff (Community Support Specialists) and consumers work together to:

  • Learn about diagnoses and symptoms
  • Learn symptom management, wellness, and recovery strategies
  • Access resources in the community to combat poverty
  • Make and keep medical appointments
  • Find and keep safe, affordable housing
  • Pursue education or job training
  • Strengthen skills to live independently
  • Develop healthy social and recreational interests

Medication Services

On-site psychiatrists provide assessments and prescribe medications if needed. Community Support Specialists may assist with getting to appointments and communicating with psychiatrists and may help assure medications are picked up from the pharmacy, set up properly in medication planners, and taken as prescribed. Injectable medications are administered at some sites.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services

Drop-in centers provide a place to feel accepted and respected while focusing on the ultimate goal of recovery. Structured and unstructured recreational, social, educational, and pre-vocational activities, as well as structured treatment groups, are offered.

Co-Occurring Substance Abuse Treatment

New Horizons provides "Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment" (a SAMHSA evidence-based practice) for consumers who struggle with mental illness and addiction. Program highlights include:

  • Substance abuse screening of all program applicants
  • Comprehensive substance abuse assessment of indicated enrolled consumers
  • All clinical staff trained to provide stage appropriate interventions
  • Staff consultation with a Substance Abuse Professional
  • Individual substance abuse counseling
  • Group education and counseling

Healthcare Home

Healthcare Home is a healthcare delivery approach that focuses on the whole person and provides healthcare coordination of primary care and behavioral healthcare. New Horizons is a place where individuals can come throughout their lifetime to have their healthcare needs identified and to receive the medical, behavioral and related social services and supports they need. Healthcare Home supports a recovery-focused model of care that encourages consumers to self-manage their chronic health conditions. The entire treatment team supports this effort by promoting healthy lifestyles, providing prevention and education services, ensuring access to primary and specialty care, using health information technology to monitor critical health indicators, and coordinating/monitoring emergency room and hospital admissions. The Healthcare Home does not provide primary or specialty care directly. Rather, primary and specialty medical care is provided by medical staff in other medical offices in the community with New Horizons staff coordinating care. New Horizons Nurse Care Managers perform annual health screenings and provide patient education on a variety of topics.

Homeless Services

New Horizons is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to provide "Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH)." PATH Workers and homeless consumers work together to:

  • Secure basic shelter in a homeless shelter, camp, or permanent housing
  • Access needed psychiatric services and medications
  • Apply for income and support programs such as Social Security, Medicaid, and food stamps
  • Make a plan to reverse or stabilize the factors that led to homelessness
  • Secure a stable future

Residential Services

New Horizons supports each consumer to live as independently as possible in the environment that offers the level of support they need.

Most consumers live independently. Some live in public housing. Many receive rent assistance from local public housing authorities. Some live in supervised programs or facilities where staff either visit frequently or are there 24 hours per day.

New Horizons owns and operates the following Residential Care Facilities licensed by the Missouri Department of Mental Health and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services:

  • Melody House - a 15-bed facility located in Jefferson City, MO. Rooms are single-occupancy.
  • Harambee House - a 15-bed facility located in Columbia, MO. Rooms are single-occupancy.

Melody House and Harambee House residents are provided with room, board, routine care, twenty-four hour per day staff supervision, and full CPRP services. The programmatic goals of the Houses include the following: assisting the resident to become more functionally independent, teaching daily living skills, shaping more appropriate behaviors, improving interpersonal relationships, stabilizing psychiatric symptoms and utilizing community resources. When residents have developed the skills necessary to live more independently, New Horizons assists them in moving to a new environment.

Other Residential Programs include:

  • Warren Scott Apartments - an agency owned and administered apartment house comprised of 14 one-bedroom apartments. On-site staff administer medications and provide additional supports as needed. All residents participate in CPRP.
  • Richard Walz Apartments - an agency owned and administered apartment house comprised of 9 one-bedroom apartments. On-site staff provide twenty-four hour per day staff supervision and full CPRP services. The programmatic goals of the facility include the following: assisting the resident to become more functionally independent, teaching daily living skills, shaping more appropriate behaviors, improving interpersonal relationships, stabilizing psychiatric symptoms, and utilizing community resources. When residents have developed the skills necessary to live more independently, New Horizons assists them in moving to a new environment.
  • McKee Street Apartments - an agency owned and administered apartment house comprised of 12 one-bedroom apartments. On-site staff provide twenty-four hour per day staff supervision and full CPRP services. The programmatic goals of the facility include the following: assisting the resident to become more functionally independent, teaching daily living skills, shaping more appropriate behaviors, improving interpersonal relationships, stabilizing psychiatric symptoms, and utilizing community resources. When residents have developed the skills necessary to live more independently, New Horizons assists them in moving to a new environment.
